Robert Wheeler previously served as managing director with Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc., where he focused on natural resources mergers and acquisitions. In March 2015, Robert Wheeler joined the North Atlantic Refining Company board and accepted responsibilities with North Atlantic Refining Limited as external director. The latter firm operates out of Newfoundland, Canada, and owns and operates a refinery with a history extending to the early 1970s.
The refinery was completed in 1973 after two years of construction and was operated by Shaheen Resources until 1976, when market dynamics forced the company into bankruptcy. In 1986, Newfoundland Processing, Ltd., undertook a plant refurbishment and began receiving crude oil shipments again.
The plant was purchased by Vitol Refining Group in the mid-1990s, and the plant took its present name North Atlantic Refining Limited. Millions of dollars of investments over the next dozen years brought the operation to the industry forefront. Owners over the past decade have included Harvest Energy and Korea National Oil Corporation.
In late 2014, the refinery was purchased by its current owner SilverRange Financial Partners, a New York-based investment company.
